Artist Statement:
I am a Sri Lankan artist/stamp
designer. Today the wide world
has become a global village,
and we in turn have bridged
the gaps of physical distance
between communities in
different continents via
internet and satellite. Art is
a medium through which tears
could be transformed into
smiles, bitterness could be
converted into sweetness, dusk
could be dissolved in dazzling
daylight. Such is the power
inherent in art, as such my
indentity is the art - medium
of water colour....

Reviews for Palitha Gunasinghe:

Serendib - Sept/October 2002 -Magazine of Sri Lankan Airlines
Water colour painting is like meditating says multi-talented artist Palitha Gunasinghe of his main displine. Renuka Sadanandan caught up with him in Colombo to find out more.
There is a certain meditative, dream-like tranquility that comes from Palitha Gunasinghe' water colours, a quality of repose, of inner peace-and it makes sense when you meet the mild-mannered, slightly build artist. The artist displayed some 4o WC paintings, all depicting Sri Lankan life and ladscapes, and done in soft, subtle strokes, drawing the viewer into a serene contemplation of his vision-solitary lighthouses standing sentinel against lowering skies, stormy seas, ancient temples and saffron-clad monks wending their way through hazy fields. These are images familiar to every Sri Lankan-beloved views of the villages, the sea and the temples. And it's to these everyday scenes that Palitha touches his brush, seeking to capture and convey a culture and a lifestyle that he feels is fast vanishing. Talk to him and you'll find he's emphatic about the need to preserve what he sees as the essential wealth of Sri Lanka's traditional culture. By painting these historic Buddhist places of worship, and giving colour to the rugged stones, he hopes a different generation will see with new eyes the heritage they take so much for granted. For the exhibition he spent many days travelling to Negombo to observe the fishing folk at work. In the bustling coastal town, he watched the daily rituals of the boats returning, the men hauling in the nets and sporting out the fish and the women waiting to carry the catch to the markets. The empathy he felt with these hard-working, humble men and women is evident in his series of paintings.
