Painting Oil (29)
Artist Statement:
My image is freedom. It is not
the freedom of expression but
rather an expression of
freedom. My art is about
dropping the veil to uncover
what’s been hidden and
unaddressed for decades, if
not centuries. It attempts to
redefine porn.
After shaving my puss nothing
remained hidden. Everything

Biggest Artistic Inspiration When I uploaded my paintings, digital images and videos on LiveDigital, I was expecting my work to be labeled "porn" mainly because the LiveDigital community was made up of the "everyday people" who liked to share video's and photos they had seen on TV or on the Internet. They were not artists and it was not an art community. Instead, their positive reactions to my work blew my mind. They "loved" and appreciated every work of art I uploaded. They labeled it "great art". This amazing virtual audience gave me the support and encouragement I needed to show my work to the art world. When two of my videos were censored, this community fought to get them uncensored because to them, my videos, my paintings... all my work was clearly "beautiful" art and not porn.
Their support continually inspired me to reach deeper inside myself, to keep going to produce stronger and stronger pieces. I do not think I would be where I am today had I not had this experience of posting my work on an interactive website.

Why Did You Become An Artist I can't remember not being an artist and I can't remember a time when I didn't get attention for my art. Maybe the reason I am an artist is because I got so much attention for it (making art) when I was a child. Who knows, but the fact remains that I received lots of attention from making art. Did I make art to get attention or did I make art because I liked making art for other reasons. Would I have continued making art when I was a small child if no one had given me attention for doing so? I will never know the answer to that question and it isn't important anyway. It is just something I think about occasionally when I am wondering why I am an artist. Was I born driven to create art or did I make art because I was starving for attention?
What is art? Why does it exist? Why am I an artist? I ponder these questions daily? So many times I wanted to quit being an artist so I could do something more meaningful... something that would help feed, clothe and shelter a suffering humanity. I would think, "This painting isn't going to feed or shelter the less fortunate, etc." Then I would try to imagine a world without music and how awful that would be. I concluded that we need music and therefore we must need my seemingly "useless" works of art.
Art feeds and nourishes the individual human soul and the soul of the community. Art solidifies the culture of the community. These cultural artifacts can be revered but most importantly, they must be preserved so the community can remember who they are. History has shown us that when you destroy the community’s culture, the community seizes to evolve and ultimately seizes to exist. So the art of our community is a record of our belief system and our history. It is the soul of the community and works of art reflect this soul. They mirror the community.
There are several stages in life an artist I passes through. The first stage (period) is that of self-expression and discovery of tools. This is before anyone tells her how to draw or what to paint or sing. We are small children making great works of art. The second stage is that of the academy. It is when and where we are taught what is right and wrong, what is good and bad and how to do it in accordance to the rules of the established academy. The third stage is that of evolution or "resistance". It is when we question or resist what we have previously been taught by the academy. This is a long lonely period of self-discovery and self-examination. Without passing through this stage artists would just repeat what the community/academy has defined as art. There would be no evolution or new thinking. In this stage, the artist realizes that the purpose of art is to expand boundaries by redefining or rewriting old definitions. To do this, the artist needs a vehicle. We call this vehicle "an image." The image can be anything that has personal meaning to the artist. . It can be a color, a line, a sound. It can be a concept like the absence of image or sound. The vehicle transports the concept in the shape of a form, which is the “image”. The image connects the community to its soul. The final stage is called the “mature stage.” It is when the artist has uncovered an image that mirrors herself as an individual who reflects the mores of her community. I am in this stage, finally at age 60.
My image is my shaved puss.
