Artist Statement for Pamela Baker

My image is freedom. It is not the freedom of expression but rather an expression of freedom. My art is about dropping the veil to uncover what’s been hidden and unaddressed for decades, if not centuries. It attempts to redefine porn.
After shaving my puss nothing remained hidden. Everything was out in the open and my puss became just another body part. Without the hair it was no longer sexual or mysterious or something to be feared or avoided. Without the hair, it became approachable. Without the hair, I was no longer feeling shame or embarrassment. Instead, I felt a strange sense of freedom. In conclusion, my art isn't about making art. It is using a visual language to document my journey toward liberation after I realized that I have been listening to and abiding by standards set by men my entire life. It is about the shame dumped on me/women by men (male dominated culture) and about freeing me/women from that shame once and for all.
The personal has become political. I am making a social/political statement more than an erotic one. I employ irony and satire to arouse and humor the mind with images that contradict and challenge, that toy with our hypocrisies, our denials and deepest desires. When viewing my work we feel like we have walked into an unlocked but occupied bathroom. We jump around as if we are completely embarrassed even if we are not. We giggle. We squirm. We slam the door shut. We take a deep breath and walk away laughing for behaving so childishly. My intention is to move this discourse out of the backroom into the living room
