Artist Statement:
When I first started
papercutting, I began with the
traditional papercut which is
cut on a fold. But I soon
abandoned this symmetrical
form while concentrating on
two other traditional
elements: geometric interlace
and Hebrew texts. And, wanting
to add dimensions and color, I
experimented with layers of
papers.
Each of my works requires a
lengthy, well thought out
process of execution. The
difficulties of this process,
often intuitive, are hidden
beneath the multiple layers of
cut paper. Starting with a
sketch, I cut each layer using
a surgical scalpel. While the
outer shape of a work is often
perfectly geometric, the inner
design is rhythmic and fluid,
with lines and curves
interwoven to create movement
and texture.
I generally use Hebrew
inscriptions, either
surrounding the design or as
an integral part of the
composition. These texts are
hand cut in precise,
calligraphic letters and
provide a subjective dimension
which is revealed in the
choice of text - usually
biblical, Talmudic or
rabbinical, and often
referencing Jerusalem.
And, because I believe that an
artist must be willing to make
afresh his tools and
techniques, I am always
looking for new ideas and
directions and am ever ready
to experiment with new ...

Israel in 1967. Prior to
settling in Jerusalem in 1978,
he was a member of an
agricultural community where
he milked cows and grew
melons. Archie Granot created
his first papercut in 1979. He

Welcome to Archie Granot's Portfolio.
