Artist Statement for Patricia George

My art is simplicity of form with color. I attempt to create a spiritual experience through an intense visual path. I always eliminate excessive details to rebuild my own vistas in the interest of creating spaciousness. Through simplification I endeavor to capture the impact of a scene with an interaction of geometric planes.

I seek to put the viewer into the paintings- therefore I usually do not include people into the work. I want those looking at the painting to become involved with the scene not with a human focal point. I want the viewer to walk in the same streets and alleys that I have walked. I desire them to be on the same ship I sailed and climb the same stairs that I climbed I wish them to experience the same emotion that I perceived while visiting a scene. I usually provide the viewer an access into the canvas by means of a walkway, a boat or a flight of stairs.

We all have preconceived ideas of an unseen locale and usually that idea is a romanticized and enchanted version acquired from books, movies or one's own imagination. Often these idealized versions of reality are shattered with an actual visit to a setting which has been ruined by urbanization, modernization and tourism. I want to display the scene of the viewer's imagination and dreams. I desire to take the audience to a time when their dreamed backdrop existed and held all the romance and fascination they had hoped for. I try to look for the quintessence of the landscape or cityscape and bring back the enchantment that was once there. I desire the viewer to experience that magic with me. I need my paintng to transcend time and space. I hope the viewer to relive an emotional memory or conjure up a magical dream.
