Artist Statement for Pat Walker Fields
|
|
|
Pat Walker was born at home in Tippah County, Mississippi and her early years were spent in Rolling Fork, a small farm community in the Mississippi Delta. She loves the Delta, where her Father was a farmer and her Mother was a poet. She delights in memories of her family, Delta farm life, and wonderful friends. Her Mother started her drawing education at an early age, and the artist began her journey.
She says, "I have raised my hand to the sky many times and said, Thank you God,for making me an artist ... an oil painter.
Pat Walker-Fields has won many awards as a Southern Artist. Her reputation has grown as a gifted oil painter. Her work has been often
referred to as "Reaching for the Light." Walker's works manipulate elements of light and dark, known as representational "chiaroscuro": to imbue mystery and emotion in still life, portraits and landscapes. "I want to carry the viewer into the painting with the beauty of light, but leave enough mystery to allow the viewers heart to feel something in their imagination." The emotion in her artwork is evidence that this artist's sensitivity holds nothing back. A trip to her studio is not only a surprise but food for the soul and a feast for the eyes which speaks louder than any words might convey.

My work has been described as, "Reaching for the Light" I believe this has come from believing in, "The Road Less Traveled!"
In doing a little research about writing an artist statement, I have found all manner of books to purchase, and advise by the artist coach. However, it seems they all seem to have one thing in common, why do you do what you do?
The answer for me Pat Walker, AKA:Pat Walker-Fields, is I can't do anything else and live. I could exist, but not live. I was born to be an artist, and it is my choice to follow.
About Art:
Painting is the pursuit of understanding. Painting is not limited to self expression, but one's sensitivity to seeing. It is spiritual. An artist must not just look, they must see. I knew from the first time my Mother put a pencil in my hand. I have raised my hand to the sky many times and said, " Thank you God, for making me not only an artist but an oil painter!" I believe we all have a purpose something wonderful and fun in our pursuit for the understanding, for me it is the beauty of painting.
I was born in Walnut, Mississippi and grew up in the Mississippi Delta. I was supported and allowed by my parents, school teachers and community to express my creativity. One of my primary interest in my work is a sharp contrast of light and dark. My work has been described as, "Reaching for the Light" I believe this has come from believing in, "The Road Less Traveled!"
I am a representational oil painter. Whether portrait, landscape, or still life, I paint every day in search of understanding of beauty emotion, and passion on my canvas. My hope is to evoke a like response in the viewer. When people see my work, I hear, "Your work is so emotional and passionate." The first time someone said that to me, I was surprised and filled with joy. I knew, but I was excited the viewer could see beauty and feel my emotion, and passion. I have heard it many times, but it always makes me happy.
making me an artist and an oil painter!"
To pass it on, Pat teaches a gifted program once a week, at St. Clare Elementary school in Waveland, Mississippi. She travels teaching workshops and has an adult class in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
Pat has two sons and six grandchildren. She and her husband, James Fields live in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
