Artist Statement for Peter Marangi

I am an illustrator and artist that distinguishes himself from the masses. My ability to voice opinions and convey messages through my art has allowed me the opportunity to develop a truly unique style and vision. It is difficult to separate ones character from ones work. The people and causes I feel passionate about are depicted in much of my work with the same strength and emotion that they instill in me. I believe that along with my talent, it is this passion that has garnered a great deal of attention around my recent work.
After graduating from Sheridan College this past spring (after a nine year hiatus) I was presented with the Faculty Award of 2002 which recognized outstanding achievements within the renowned
program. As my career continues to progress I have also managed to impress several magazine publications with my
original style. The respect of the art community, faculty, art directors and advertising executives has provided me with
confidence and assurances that my work has mass appeal and definite validity.
My experience as an autoworker for the past nine years at the Ford Oakville Truck Plant has served as
enlightenment and inspiration for the "Ford Series". This slice of life series is 100% influenced by what I see on a
daily basis at the assembly plant. The steel medium, pain chips, and the emotions of the workers are all part of this
daily reality. I feel it is necessary to put a visual to the everyday stories of the people that make up the truck plant.
Further, I feel that their contributions to the plant and society should not go unnoticed. Their stories deserve to be
told and the character of the work force should be preserved with dignity.
So far, there are seven pieces in the Ford Series. The first of which is entitled "Akbar". The Akbar piece has a
great deal of significance to me. This piece was several years in the making. We worked side by side for over two
years. Culturally Akbar and I are very different individuals. Part of his religion involves strict islamic prayer at
specific times. At first this seemed quite foreign to me. However, as time went on I saw how nothing could deter or
interfere with his commitment to prayer. I came to admire and respect his dedication to his faith, and it turn he has
greatly influenced my life.
I continually strive to create beautiful and meaningful art, and to use my talent in a way that may inspire or benefit
others. Whether it be from volunteering my time to the Catholic Church for the Barnabites projects, donating
paintings to the Will to Win Foundation, or assisting the local 707 union with art work, I believe that my art can and
does impact others.
