Artist Statement:
I see human artifacts as a more accurate reflection of the society that created them. Bypassing the superficialities of commercial culture, I find beauty in utilitarian things and unmanaged settings.
Everyday objects and locales possess a sublime sense of form, proportion, and color. They appear genuine without being nostalgic, are often grand without being alienating, and are original without being sensational.
I systematically explore venues of the overlooked along the backroads of America. I look for things too utilitarian to be noticed and vistas driven by too frequently to stand out. Sharply rendered with a view camera and Ilfochrome prints, my subjects have less in common than the way I treat them.
More than anything else I discover color. Accidental or intended, color is not formally understood and thus can bypass the affectations of the mind and speak sincerely from the heart. I employ point of view, form and texture to lend the color presence and veracity.
My images show a world apart from headlines and hyperbole, where the maelstrom of the human condition is hidden in plain sight....
