With efforts for Painting during the past time, artist Pham Kien Giang had importantly long advances in his art career. Marking those acknowledgeable advances is the successes He gained, especially the most recent success from the Exhibition “Immortal Art Declaration”.
Silent atmosphere just after the opening until the closing of small or big exhibitions by new faces, less well-known and well-known ones showed a gloomy context of Vietnam’s Painting Circle in recent years.
It is likely to say that the success from the Exhibition “Immortal Art Declaration” of painter Pham Kien Giang is a really rare success. Giang’s paintings expressed the thing Vietnamese art-lovers expecting for a long time: NEW – a new view , a new expression, and awaking new emotions in viewers. It is said like that because Giang brought 18 paintings to the Exhibition and 2/3 of them sold right after finishing the Exhibition. That proved attractiveness of artworks by painter Pham Kien Giang for art-lovers.
Paintings of painter Giang are landscapes– popular and loved subject of Vietnamese painters. Although Giang’s landscapes are also sweet like those of other painters, the sweetness in his paintings surely creates the special attractiveness for viewers. So, what made such a distinctiveness in Giang’s art?
Giang’s works are appreciated firstly by through them, we see a continuous creativity and the tireless effort for His personal style. When enjoying Giang’s paintings, we are always attracted by familiar contexts made by irregular compositions with unexpected expressions. And He is partly successful when discovering a lot of his own methods to create the landscapes: That is expression of terraced fields and range after range mountains by strokes with different bright and dark colors, that is the way to made contexts real but dreamy, familiar but very strange through compositions with full of suddenness. One of those methods is the abstractizating expressive object through lively image of leaves.
The very specific nature in Giang’s art lies in lines, brush strokes, motives (boats, roof, paths, rivers, leaves, bamboo ranges...), color combination, unfamiliar space, compositions not following perspective and first of all spiritual value which Giang’s artworks bring to viewers.
Those values are emotion of quietness, peace without disorder, of what seem not to be influenced by time so that we can wallow in quiet space until the end, pleasure seems to stop there, and we are lost in unchangeable permanent Heaven.
Giang’s landscapes are open spaces. It is not important for him to paint fully detailed landscapes like itself in reality but only some details, some suggestions leading to another wider space, a suggestion for very different contexts, depending on emotion and perception of viewers – an really changeable landscape.
Success of the last exhibition marked an important turning-point in artistic career of Pham Kien Giang: Giang is ranked as one of the popular artists beside the famous contemporary artists in the world.
“Leaves” is the exhibition to highlight one of very particular expressive styles of painter Giang.
Images of Leaves, through drawing lines of Giang, are appeared with emotional, attractive, quite and peaceful context and with different manifestable meanings.
It is not by chance that Giang selected image of Leaves as a special motif for one of His landscape lines. It is due to observant character, his attachment for nature and memories from childhood which created the emotional resource so that the Painter bring into his paintings. Giang has kept all his memories and then in some moments, they are risen up and expressed strongly, clearly through Giang’s Paintings.
Image of Leaves really has a lot of meanings. Each Leaf is same to one destiny with its own cycle. ; Both leaf and the human have origin, background, their own experiences and then going to the arranged place. Leaf is grown up, changed its color, and fell. The human life is also like that: born, then grown up, experimentalized and forever leave the world some days.
Through motif of Leaves, painter Giang created lively metaphorical abstract paintings. It is likely to be the Leaves that are going to fall when Autumn comes, Leaves can also become boats with full of emotion, Leaves are sometimes small houses, home port of dragonflies…, Leaves are a lot, a lot of thinking and emotion of the painter.
Leaf – under brush strokes of Giang, sometimes is very rugged because rib of a leaf is very dry and straight. Leaf becomes more rugged when leaf edge is made from thick oil layers. Leaf in Giang’s paintings sometimes is pliable and full of vitality. Painter Giang often selects vibrant colors to express Leaves, these colors always bring to strong emotiveness and emotional effectiveness is emphasized.
