Artist Statement for Patricia Phare Camp

I cut my first tooth on a paintbrush in my Mother's studio, where I learned to draw and paint. My whole life has been in an art studio. When I was a little girl I would sit and make paper dolls, designing outfits for them as I watched my Mother paint. Now I like to use the computer as an art tool. I will sketch my ideas, scan them and then play with the digital images till I determine the composition and colors I will work with. Sometimes while playing around I will create collages of my photos, sketches and ready-made computer clip art. I print the final plans, do a painting of the image and/or transfer the digital print to wood for black & white or multi-color woodcut prints. I attempt in my art to convey socially relevant and socially conscious dialogue that is still amusing; often if it bores me or doesn't make me laugh I throw it away.

I love to correspond on line with other woodcut artist around the world and am a member of barenforum.org, a world wide woodcut artist's Internet forum. I regularly participate in print exchanges with these same artists.

I'm currently working on my Masters in Fine Art via the internet through the Academy of Art University in San Franscico. I'm taking some fascinating classes and using a lot of new materials. Some of the materials are so new that even the instructors are still experimenting with them and learning new stuff! It's been a lot of great arting fun.
