| Your Personal Biography |
A painter, photographer, and filmmaker,
James Philip Pegg was born on the Great Lakes in Port Huron, Michigan.
Phil Pegg left home at the early age of fifteen, went to California, where he graduated from Bakersfield High School and studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute.
He join the U.S. Navy in 1963, sailed the Caribbean, studied Art in Arizona, Texas, Europe, and the West Indies. He graduated with a Commercial Art Degree, with a minor in Photography in 1975.
By the late sixties Phil Pegg was well known for his Caribbean paintings, printmaking, photography and for his association with other Caribbean artists; which included John Hitesman, Maria Henle, Terry Price and Photographer Sam Hughes.
Pegg's art has all the appearance of a flight from civilization, of a search for new ways of life, more primitive, more real and more sincere. His break away from a solid middle-class world, his refusal to accept easy glory and easy gain are the best-known aspects of Pegg's fascinating life and personality.
Phil is married to a great lady who shared this gypsy life style with him. Lydia and Phil spent most of their lives living in the West Indies and in Belize, Central America where they raised two sons, Chris and Erik.
Phil Pegg discovered primitive art, with its flat forms and the violent colours belonging to an untamed nature. And then, with absolute sincerity, he transferred them into his drawings, woodcuts, paintings, and photography.
