Artist Statement for Phil Volk

The Exploration of Line, Form, and Color

My work constantly occupies my mind. If it's not rapped around the piece I'm currently working on, then I'm thinking about the theory, philosophy, or history behind it.

I am in search of the image not yet seen. Each work is a puzzle that must be solved. The pieces to the puzzle are line, form, and color. The correct application of the pieces create a composition that I feel effectively express the solution to the "Blankist" canvas.
(Please see the page titled "Phil's Philosophy" for more information on Blankism.)

Much of my work consists of the representational abstraction of heads, faces, and figures in various expressions, and situations. At times these figures are combined with free form or geometric shapes which can lead to total abstraction. In this case, the subject can only be identified by the name of the piece.

The abstraction of the human body has a rhythmic familiarity and expressiveness to me that I find difficult to escape. I do, at times, venture in other directions with my work, only to return to this subject. I will sometimes choose the image to produce but quite often the image chooses me. This holds true to my art philosophy.

I have and will create various series that pull me in their direction. One of the series, which does not incorporate the figure, is the battlefield series. These non-figurative pieces are my buffer or "palette cleansing" works. They create a much needed hiatus from the figure. I find that when I do return to the figure, it's with a freshness that would otherwise be impossible to attain.

My recent work features partially shaded line drawings. The background is filled with a combination of color that further expresses the mood of the subject. I have really enjoyed exploring this process of painting and I am looking forward to the further development of this style.

Right now I am working primarily in acrylic paints but I have, and will, use any and all traditional and non-traditional media to convey the feeling and message needed to complete the work.
