Artist Statement for Phyllis Koppel

How images are processed has been a constant factor influencing my work. An image loses its objectivity the moment we process it, either in our mind, the studio or the darkroom. By closely looking at single details I try to find the diversity of an image, its multiple meanings.

Growing up in Mexico City trained my aesthetic sense to the powers of colour and texture. It was these elements I concentrated on when I studied photography at the University of California in San Diego. As I made the transition from photographer to painter, light became an integral component of my work.

I use whatever is immediately at hand in order to express what I am processing internally, the layering of meaning. I have produced three dimensional pieces with found objects, natural and man-made materials and I have drawn and painted in a variety of media, styles and sizes. The current series of portraits delves into multiculturalism and diversity. These portraits represent the cultures found in the city in which I live. The portraits are meant to represent generic people, someone we have all known, met or seen somewhere.

I captured the warm sensuality of light during my years living in the Middle East and the Caribbean. Now that I am in Canada, a different glow altogether has incorporated itself into my work.
