Statement: Individual works / Grit Höhn
Photography and Installation are the media for my artistic work, with Video becoming an ever stronger influence over the past two years. The central point of my work is man´s relationship to his environment, whereby communication with people is a very important aspect. Behavioural situations beget confrontation. The artistic debate begins at that point where I feel the structure of the behaviour becomes complex and complicated. The moment is subjective. To me it is the circumstantial which is of interest – the interwoven structures are captured and become visible in my work.
Existing and/or insinuated Situations are captured using various means (there is no limitation to the media I utilize). The first step is collection, the second selection. I combine the chosen material, confronting various states with one another in order to develop relational structures which provide the subject of my debate with a theme and visibility.
This approach mirrors my experiences, whereby I still wish to remain down to earth - representative of a simple and free person while at the same time offering a constructive portrayal. Differing measures of various qualities emerge from teamwork which become united during the exchange conceptual ideas – it is this which fundamentally occupies me.
The promotion of and requirement for the personal ability to structure and channel is inseparable from my artistic work, whereby teamwork supports its effectiveness in public. A high level of complexity is achieved.
The differences in the imagery of my work describe in their compilation and combination the daily diversity as it is individually perceived by everyone. Everyone is alone in their understanding of their daily situation; in maintaining communication and the ability to perform daily actions; in maintaining the balance between systemisation and intuition because intuition is a source of identity which has its roots in real but not rational processes. This is my motivation. It raises, amongst others, the question of the extent to which it is possible to depart from the systems or whether there is a system behind intuition.

The exhibitions base in my artistic work has been extended to further media. Teamwork, locality specific work in public, performance and mobility have become more influential. The personal relationship to Time has changed. The work as an independent artist requires high levels of self-motivation and organisation. It is not only essential to find the stance with respect to society. An intensive analysis of the art market and the building of a structural network define my day to day activities. Media reflective work and complexity are central to my artistic expression, whereby it is not only important to me to utilize the aesthetics of the multimedia but also the complexity and interdisciplinary possibilities which working on the basis of concepts offers. Communication is my most important tool.

The media of our work to date show a constant factor – installation. The form of the installation varies according to the contents or theme of the artistic analysis. The work with space has also remained a constant – directly dependant on the locality of the exhibition. The resulting artistic expression is then supplemented by video and sound, the usage of light or the employment of ready mades. The tendency of analysis using the mechanics of social situations is coming ever more to the fore. The actual teamwork itself, along with the analysis of interpersonal relationships, is illustrative of this – and is one of the themes of the project “pack of patches”. Open Source, Networking etc. also play a role, along with the analysis of public areas with art rooms, the second being rooms specifically set aside for the purpose of Art. This concept includes primarily the concrete occupation with the Art market and its institutionalisation. The Value and possible mechanisms of Art agencies define the frame for the analysis. A pool of ideas (Open Source) has been created by including other artists as well as “non specialists” in our team, while concurrently realising the idea of an open network by combining differing personalities.
The primary base is the Team pieptuul which is a co-operation between Grit Höhn & Toralf Kandera and has been in existence since the year 2000. The first project, “Cybele” was realised in 2001. pieptuul as a Label appeared publicly for the first time in 2002 with “PIEPTUL 2002”. This type of co-operation is of great importance as, both in the past as well as the present, it has proved itself in many and diverse ways to be the foundation for the development of artistic works. „Appropriation art“ - Person A throws in an idea, Person B digests it, considers it and throws it back, forcing A to further develop it; and so it continues. A and B compete in the heat of the dispute and provoke one another, through critical questioning about their respective positions, to defend and to attack in order to work through the resulting chain of arguments to reach the crunch of the matter. The sequence of the discussion produces ideas, giving them substance. Each brings his or her own way of thought and speech, as well as their own technical abilities. Thus Teamwork will remain in the foreground. Several concepts and ideas, some of which are still to be realised, some are already in progress, bear witness to the effectiveness and professionalism which we have achieved over the last 5 years.

Statements: Einzelarbeiten / Grit Höhn
Die Medien meiner künstlerischen Arbeit sind Fotografie und Installation. Video als Ausdrucksmittel nimmt seit den letzten zwei Jahren verstärkt Einfluß. Im Mittelpunkt meiner Arbeit steht der Mensch in Beziehung zu seiner Umwelt. Dabei ist die Kommunikation mit Menschen sehr wichtig.
Aus Bewegungsabläufen entsteht Konfrontation. Erreichen die Strukturen von Bewegung für mich Komplexität, Kompliziertheit, beginnt die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung. Dieser Moment ist subjektiv. Für mich ist das Umständliche interessant – netzartige Strukturen werden in meinen Arbeiten festgehalten und sichtbar gemacht.
Mit verschiedensten Mitteln (eine mediale Einschränkung gibt es für mich nicht) werden vorgefundene und/oder inszenierte Situationen festgehalten. Der erste Schritt ist Sammeln, der Zweite ist Selektieren. Das ausgewählte Material kombiniere ich, konfrontiere verschiedene Zustände miteinander, um Beziehungsstrukturen zu entwickeln, welche den Gegenstand meiner Auseinandersetzung thematisieren und aufzeigen.
Diese Herangehensweise spiegelt mein persönliches Erfahrungsgut wieder, dabei möchte ich bodenständig bleiben – als freier einfacher Mensch repräsentativ sein und eine konstruktive Darstellung anbieten. Verschiedene Qualitäten treten bei Teamarbeiten in besonderem Maße auf. Sie werden durch Konzeptarbeit zusammengeführt, welche mich grundsätzlich beschäftigt. Das Fördern und Fordern von persönlichen Fähigkeiten zu strukturieren und kanalisieren steht in unmittelbarer Nähe zu meiner künstlerischen Arbeit. Dabei unterstützt die Arbeit im Team öffentliche Wirksamkeit. Eine hohe Komplexität wird erreicht.
Die Unterschiede der Bildaussagen meiner Arbeit beschreiben in der Zusammenstellung und der Kombination die Diversität des Alltages, welche von jedem Mensch individuell wahrgenommen wird. Im Verstehen des Alltages ist Jeder auf sich allein gestellt. Die Kommunikation und Handlungsfähigkeit aufrechtzuerhalten – den Spagat zwischen Systematisierung und Intuition wagen, da Intuition eine Erkenntnisquelle ist, der reale, aber keine rationalen Prozesse zu Grunde liegen – dies ist mein Motivationsmotor. Es stellt sich mir unter anderem die Frage, inwiefern es möglich ist, Systeme zu verlassen oder ob sich hinter Intuition ein System verbirgt.

Die Darstellungsebenen in meiner künstlerischen Arbeit haben sich um weitere Medien ergänzt. Teamwork, das ortsspezifische Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum, Performance und Mobilität haben verstärkt Einfluß genommen. Der persönliche Bezug zu dem Thema Zeit hat sich verändert. Als freie Künstlerin zu arbeiten erfordert ein hohes Maß an Selbstmotivation und Organisation. Es ist nicht nur notwendig für mich, eine Haltung gegenüber der Gesellschaft zu finden. Eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kunstmarkt und das Aufbauen von Netzwerkstrukturen bestimmen meinen Alltag.
Medienreflexives Arbeiten und Komplexität sind zentral für meinen künstlerischen Ausdruck. Dabei ist es mir nicht nur wichtig, die Ästhetik des Multimedialen zu benutzen, sondern die Komplexität bzw. Interdisziplinarität, die eine Arbeit mit Konzepten bietet, auszuschöpfen. Kommunikation ist mein wichtigstes Werkzeug.

Statement: Teamarbeiten / pieptuul: Grit Höhn und Toralf Kandera
Die Medien unserer bisherigen Arbeiten besitzen als eine Konstante die Form der Installation. Je nach Inhalt bzw. Thema der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung variiert die Art der Installation. Gleichbleibend ist die Arbeit mit dem Raum - die lokalspezifische Bearbeitung der Ausstellungsfläche. Ergänzt wird diese Form des künstlerischen Ausdrucks mal durch Video und Klang, dem Einsatz von Licht oder der Arbeit mit ready mades. Tendenziell ist festzustellen, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit Mechanismen gesellschaftlicher Zustände immer stärker in den Vordergrund tritt - Teamwork ist ebenso ein solcher Zustand wie das Hinterfragen zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen, was unter anderem durch das Projekt „pack of patches“ thematisiert wird - Open Source, Network etc. spielen hier ebenso eine Rolle wie die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis von öffentlichem Raum und Kunstraum, also dem geschützten Raum, der für die Kunst schon vorgesehen ist. In dieser Konzeption fließt erstmals die konkrete Beschäftigung mit dem Kunstmarkt und dessen Institutionalisierung mit ein. Das Vermögen und die denkbaren Mechanismen von Kunstvermittlung definieren den Rahmen dieser Auseinandersetzung. Durch die Einbeziehung anderer Künstler und „fachfremder“ Personen in unser Team wird ein Ideenpool (Open Source) geschaffen und gleichzeitig die Vorstellung eines offenen Netzwerkes unter verschiedenen Persönlichkeiten realisiert.
Als primäre Basis existiert das Team pieptuul, welches eine Kooperation zwischen Grit Höhn und Toralf Kandera ist. Seit dem Jahre 2000 existiert diese Zusammenarbeit. Das erste große Projekt wurde 2001 mit der Arbeit „Cybele“ realisiert. pieptuul als Label trat dann 2002 mit der Installation „PIEPTUUL 2002“ in der Öffentlichkeit in Erscheinung. Diese Art der Zusammenarbeit nimmt einen sehr hohen Stellenwert ein, da in der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart diese Form als Grundstein für die Entwicklung künstlerischer Werke sich in vielfältiger Art und Weise behauptet hat. „Appropriation art“ - Person A wirft ein, was Person B gleich aufnimmt, weiterdenkt und wieder ausspuckt, was A zu weiteren Einwürfen zwingt usw. - A und B konkurrieren in der Hitze des Disputes, treiben sich durch kritische Fragen in Positionen, welche sie zum Verteidigen, zum Angriff zwingen um dann aus der entstehenden Kette von Argumenten die Essenz des Themas herauszuarbeiten. Prozessualität der Diskussion als Quelle der Findung und Konkretisierung von Ideen. Jeder bringt seine eigene Sprache bzw. Denkweise sowie technische Fähigkeiten ein. So wird auch in der Zukunft Teamwork stark im Vordergrund stehen. Mehrere Konzepte und Ideen, die zum Teil noch auf ihre Realisierung warten, zum Teil gerade in Arbeit sind, geben Zeugnis der Effektivität und Professionalisierung, die wir uns in den letzten fünf Jahren erarbeitet haben.
