Artist Statement:
February 2007
As I was drafting this artist statement, I began thinking about why I make my art. I believe that it is because every time I draw or paint, or even think about art, it takes me back to my childhood. I remember the first time I made a drawing. How I felt a tremendous sense of joy and wonderment. I thought that I had created magic. Call it an instant endorphin hit, or whatever you want, but I have felt that magic, each and every time since.
My formative years were spent studying animals and nature. In particular I loved birds, dogs and horses and drew them at every opportunity. The library was a great resource for me and I read all the art books voraciously. I was intrigued to discover how the masters created their art, so I would set myself a challenge to copy them.
My parents disapproved of my drawing activity, but I never allowed that to deter me. When they were in dreamland, I would quietly wake up at 2am in the morning and happily draw all night. Consequently, this did not help my grades, but my drawing skills blossomed.
