Artist Statement for Silvia Poloto

Experiences in multiple media have allowed me to discover and explore many approaches during my artistic journey. Trough my sculpture and painting, I bring together an assortment of thoughts and images. I do not strive to portray the obvious, instead, I push the viewer to rely on his/her intuition. I challenge the viewer to translate my visual language from a subjective position.
Whether it is sculpture or it is painting, I work in series. Once I envision a concept, I start exploring it, until I feel I have expressed what I wanted to say. I have no preconceived idea of my finished work. For me it has everything to do with the process, which inevitably will express my self and aspirations.
I take a long time to develop the surfaces of my paintings because texture is a essential component in making them effective. I apply acrylic, charcoal, crayon and sometimes collage on canvas or wood. I work and rework the surfaces, creating rich, deep, bold spaces through the application of multiple transparent layers. The process, which I approach intuitively, seems to open my imagination. It’s a dynamic process, without a predetermined idea – they develop and evolve as I work on them. I let it find what it wants to be.
I enjoy using acrylics because they suit my impulsive nature. They also allow me to bring other material spontaneously. In keeping with my aim to simplify my compositions, I finish the canvases so that they don’t need distracting frames. I prefer to allow the paintings to stand alone in their individual essences.
