Artist Statement for Nicola Powys

|
Nicola paints using oil or mixed media on paper, canvas or wood. She starts with colour, and follows her intuition for the rest - with an initial idea, but no knowledge of where the paint might lead her!
She paints on the floor, moving around the canvas to inject the brush strokes and marks with as much energy as possible.
The subject matter is people and the spaces between, though Nicola is working more and more on depicting the more spiritual side of the psyche - painting the voices inside.
Keeping an immediacy in the work means that the painting process is haphazard - one in five canvases will work - but the one that works has an almost meditative charge to it.
