Artist Statement:
Raised on a farm miles from the nearest town with no one my own age nearby, my playmates were fields, ponds, and my imagination. Later, my education in architecture exposed me to the connection between math and beauty as well as taught me how to express a concept in many forms. This has allowed the otherworldly images in my head to flesh out into a structured world, something like a scientific Alice in Wonderland.
An example of this is Pod 01, which I’ve adopted as a logo of sorts. This creature references the nautilus shell and its relationship to the golden section or spiral, a proportion of simplicity and infinity that is often observed in nature and was beloved by ancient Greek architects.
Until recently, these mathematical references have been complemented by straightforward techniques, a restricted palette and have been limited to two-dimensions. The near future will see my subject matter take on a new life in color and expand into more narrative contexts. They will also grow a third dimension as I embark on sculpture and installation projects in my continuing effort to bring this world to life....
