| Why Did You Become An Artist |
Fine Art was not something that I knew about when I first started drawing portraits at age thirteen, and it wasn't until I was nineteen, that I saw painting up close, when I went on a field trip with fellow college students to the Legion of Honor and the De Young in San Francisco. I can remember standing in front of pictures, some centuries old, very realistic and mind boggling, others contemporary, expressive, and loose. I felt overwelmed, my excitement indescribable. From then on, it was like the world slowly opened up to me, through museums, galleries, bookstores, and cafes. Art has deepened and envigorated me. I wouldn't thrive without artistic expression. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I studied art with Sara Sealander at Yuba College, and later transfered to San Francisco State, then completing my degree at San Jose State.
While at San Jose State, I was the gallery assistant at the Fredrick Spratt Gallery, where I saw up close, the works of many talented artists such as Doug Glovaski, Phe Ruiz, Mark Tansey, and George Herms. I can't forget what is was like to handle and look paintings up close, I formed opinions about everything I saw.
Upon completion of my degree, I lived in Philadelphia for three years and was able to visit New York City and see many of the pictures that I knew from my art history books. Most memorable were Van Gogh, Rousseau, and Klimt.
Five years in Mexico followed, giving me the opportunity to know the contemporary side of Mexico City with a very vibrant art scene, and the wonderful and exciting complexities of mexican culture.
Leaving Mexico with a vision that I was going to learn how to make furniture that could be embellished with my paintings, I came to know a prolific woodworker named Fredrick Atwood, in Chico, California. Fred has shared his knowledge and passion for the material and craft, as well as his studies with James Krenov, Art Carpenter and his love for George Nakashima.
I am currently working in my studio here in Chico, California. |
