Artist Statement for Randi Reiss-Mccormack

I approach my work from a mixed-media collage sensibility, redefining and pulling elements from a myriad of sources
I pool my images from just about anywhere; instructional booklets, children’s books, old science magazines, Japanese comics and encyclopedias are examples. The vocabulary of images that intrigue me are those that have both a visual appeal and an undertone of a personal narrative. My collection of images serves as my vocabulary that I weave and expand into different combinations. I work on a few pieces at a time playing with the meaning of the image and how it interacts with the materials and pattern with which I paint. Painting on fabrics or using patterns and overlays is a common way that I create a swirling world from which these images exist and evolve. Using a textured background or complex pattern also challenges and cements the images into a type of cohesion.

Drawing is a medium I love to use in combination with paint and collage, because of its versatility and fluidity. This medium seems to coincide with the rambling of thought and ideas that I like to toss around the canvas. Drawing has a wonderful immediacy and openness that brings out the narrative. In this latest series of work, elements that I usually present in collage are worked out in paint. This series is done primarily in oil paint and I have chosen to collage painting styles rather than different materials. Play is a big part of my work and the canvas is the structure that holds together this collision of ideas and materials
