Robert Arnold was born in Buffalo, New York, and received his bachelor's degree from the New York State University College at Buffalo in 1966. He holds a master's degree from Florida State University and a doctorate from Indiana University. He began teaching at Ohio State in 1970, expecting to stay for only a year or two, but got to like it here and stayed for 35 years.
Between 1986 and 1997, he held several administrative positions at Ohio State, including Associate Dean of the College of the Arts, 1986-1990, Acting Dean of the College in 1987-1988, Associate Provost for Instruction and Curriculum, 1990-1994, and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, 1994-1997. He returned to full time teaching in the Department of Art Education in 1997.
He is the author of numerous articles on contemporary art and art education and has lectured on these subjects throughout the United States. His paintings have been shown in numerous one-man exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand. His work has been the subject of articles and reviews in a number of publications, including Art in America, and he is listed in Who's Who in American Art.
Robert Arnold retired from OSU in July 2005, and now spends his time having fun and making art.
