ABOUT MY WORK
(mixed mediums on cotton, linen & papers)
The works shown stretch across 30+ years of my professional career. Some of the paintings date from the early 1980 up until the most recent in 2006 (Paintings, drawings, screens, window treatments). Where indicated, by price, the works are available for purchase. Several of the works in public collections are shown to give an idea of the breadth and range of my creative output. I am open to commissions for specific sites and enjoy working collaboratively with architectural, interior and private designers.
Educated in Europe, the Far East and the United States, with degrees in philosophy, language and music, I am inclined in my paintings and surface designs to work in a serial manner, exploring a single subject's broad color and structural potential.
Firmly rooted in the material world of wave and particle physics and spiritually inclined towards mysticism, Eastern and Western philosophies are merged into a personal visual language. I am currently drawn to landscapes, however, "the tenor of my painting is as much a landscape of the soul as that of place. Scenes remembered and scenes invented commingle like the smells, the tastes and the textures of memorable lives". Academicians would label me "self taught". I am inclined to give teaching credit to the thousands of museums, catherdrals, musical and theatrical performances, galleries, libraries, world travels and spiritual focus. Combined, these experiences have instructed me and have been my mentors.
My life long interest in music heavily influences my visual creations. In fact I believe that there is a symbiotic relationship between, color, shape and sound. Many of my paintings are actually musical scores, though perhaps written in an unorthodox notational system, can be played by a discering musical mind. (see below for more information)
While I am a full time studio artist I do accept opportunities to lecture and to teach workshops in my mixed medium approach to painting and surface design. The 3 day to 2 week workshops cost the sponsoring organization approximately $600 - $1,200 depending on their length of the workshop. To book a workshop pleasecall or fax 404 874-6672) or e-mail rpryb@mindspring.com.
My paintings and designs were initially informed by my university studies in music, language and philosophy with extended periods of time in Cultures foreign to Utah where I was born. I do not feel comfortable with stylistic labels. They are too confining for my own personal muses. I fully resonate with Loatzu, the Chinese poet, who wrote "...whether a man dispassionately sees to the core of life or passionately sees the surface, the core and the surface are essentially the same, words making them seem different only to express appearance..."
Unlike traditional painters who try to hide the nap or weave of the canvas or paper, I find the presence of the natural fiber to be an integral part of the "fabric" of the creative process. One is always aware of the surface on which the work is painted not unlike the instrument on which the music is played. Celebrating life's influences is a driving force.
My studies in music composition eventually led me to an understanding of the symbiotic relationships that exist between sound, color and shape. Historically colors signify specific spiritual and emotional states of mind, shapes are meaningful in their symbolic representation of the spiritual world embodied in material forms and sounds, both musical and natural, vibrate at the same frequencies as certain colors. This brings all visual and aurual perceptions into a unity of both spiritual and material reality. Studies of Phythagoras's sacred geometry, Back's well temepred scales and Newton's prismatic theories inform my painting. I feel a kindred spirit with artist like Kandinsky and composer like Elgar. However I have developed my own unique artistic language, referencing my understanding of multi-universes co-exsiting in space and time. Our ability to interact and percieve them is limited by our scientific teaching of closed systems which insists on keeping things ordered according to the scientific communities limited knowledge. Art is boundless and therefore often not understood by the mind that is schooled in traditional academic learning.
HOW I WORK
I work in a mixed medium layering technique of my own invention. Paintings and colorfast fabrics are designed and produced using colorfast dyes, enamel and acrylic paints and color pencils. These mediums are applied in multiple layers on 100 percent untreated natural fibers. The finished work has a wide range of uses in interior and architectural applications. Using this process I produce traditional paintings, wall coverings, window and door treatments and free standing divider screens. Most of my production is by commission, the price being determined by size and complexity of design.
On paper I apply softpastel, acrylic paint and pencil in multi-layers to achieve transparency and profound depth.
