Artist Statement for Rhea Malinofsky

For me, photography has never been about what it is or where it is. I leave that to photojournalists. I see black-and-white photography as having more to do with form, composition, line, light and shadow. That is what distinguishes it from color photography, which can pass on the merits of wonderful, saturated color alone.

My love affair with photography began while I was taking a painting class at a local college. During a break, I wandered into the photography lab down the hall, and what I witnessed would forever change my artistic focus. In the darkroom, I happened upon the penultimate photographic moment. Someone had slipped a sheet of paper into the developer tray, and I was there to experience, for the very first time, the emergence of a black-and-white image. I was transfixed. It was, in fact, a life-transforming experience, and to that extent, I have never looked back. The overwhelming anticipation as I watch my own prints form in the developer is rivaled only by the wonderment I feel when first discovering that "perfect image." To this day, many years later, I still stop dead in my tracks when I happen upon that eureka moment. It could be 40 feet down in a slot canyon in Utah or just walking along a Manhattan street. I know it when I see it; it is my own personal vision, and it defines me. I hope you enjoy viewing my images nearly as much as I did capturing them.

All of my photographs were taken with a medium format Hasselblad camera and are printed in the darkroom on 16" x 20" paper, selenium toned for archival quality. They are priced matted in 4" white mats. Digital prints are now available from high-resolution scanned film and printed on 13" x 19" paper: matte, glossy, or semi-gloss. Check with me for pricing.

I have recently begun to experiment in a new medium: computer design in Photoshop. I have included a few of those designs here as well. I have printed them on 13" x 19" Epson matte paper, but they can be done in any size and on any paper.

Rhea
