Artist Statement for Richard Gibbs

An active painter for more than thirty years my artistic goal has been two-fold: first to do a competent rendering of the subject with a sense of place and time. Second to instill in the work the feeling of my own emotional reaction to the subject
As a young man I was a student for three years at the Pennsylvania Academy Of The Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our studies included drawing, figure work, landscape painting, and illustration. All of the teachers of these classes critiqued our work severely on the basis of rendering, drawing, composition, design and color. Francis Speight, who taught landscape was the person who, in addition to rendering, made me understand the importance of my emotional response to the subject. That advice makes painting more difficult for me but I'm satisfied that it makes for better work.
Most of my work is done with oils. For Plein Aire work I prefer pastels and pencil simply because they are easier to carry and set up on location.
