Artist Statement for Robert Seitz

Jewelry isn't always for simple ornament. It can also act as a symbol, a glimpse of a person's depth. I strive to create designs that possess depth of meaning while subtly presented as ornament. I offer original designs and each piece is unique, hand carved and cast in my studio.
My primary influences are the natural world and the various myths and stories of the past that have shaped our relationship to objects until recent days. I hope to develop an updated synthesis of the symbolic value of this legacy and achieve a total aesthetic that is modern and comprehensive in its sweep.
Most jeweler aim to sell as much as possible to as many people as they can, following the paradigm of the modern business model. At my own personal risk, in a style reminiscent of tinkers and wandering bohemians of old, I work carefully with each piece and sell them for slightly more than you would expect, rather than producing volumes of inexpensive goods. I do not believe that striving for an artistic quality in my craft can be obtained while competing with the massive overseas variety, and hope to contribute towards our immediate culture by participation in a regional and artisan capacity.
