Artist Statement for Ronnie Holley

GRAILKNIGHT, UNLTD.
POST OFFICE BOX 614
5000 WEST ESPLANADE AVE.
METAIRIE, LOUISIANA 70006

New Orleans, Louisiana is approximately one of five cities in North America that still maintains the old world European charm, dating back to the era of colonization by the French and Spanish. This old world charm manifests itself in ways such as architecture, music, food, dress, speech and many other distinct lifestyles.

The mission of Grailknight, Unlimited is to provide photographs a truly unique “art form” in New Orleans. That “art form” is the construction of the above ground tombs, mausoleums, and elaborate religious statues throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area, and has become a large part of the tourism industry. Daily tours are offered to tourists to selected cemeteries to view the graves of famous historical figures for their association with history, the literary and fine arts.

Today, with modern drainage, there is no rational or reason to construct tombs above ground. The custom of above ground tombs date back to the original sea level of the city in the 1700’s, and the custom of the “well to do” families who could afford to build in the Greco Roman style.

This custom is one of the most misunderstood “art forms” of New Orleans and its heritage to the French colonial era dating back to the reign of Louis 16th, King of France.

Art prints are reproduced on high quality 60lb. paper and pre-matted for immediate framing. Purchase price includes shipping costs. The order will be mailed within five working days in hard bond art print mailers to insure quality condition upon receipt.
