Artist Statement:
REMNANTS
I have found myself attracted
to the remnants left by the
distant and recent pioneers
who attempted to carve out
lives for themselves in the
tough and unrelenting
mountains & deserts of the
west.
From the Sierra Nevada
Mountains of California,
Nevada, and large parts of
Utah, Oregon & Idaho, my
camera leads me to the lonely
back-roads of this most
mountainous and extreme land
seeking the intriguing
leftover evidence of the
tough, hardworking people who
desperately tried to tame it.
Mining towns, ghost towns,
ranches and homesteads all in
various states of existence,
secretly litter the landscape
leaving clues to the people
who left them.
I look for the declarations
of their presence, that which
is now being scoured to
fascinating character by the
rugged and incessant natural
elements of Mother Nature..
Worn wood, rusted metal, torn
curtains and tattered
wallpaper all things abandoned
and forgotten now transformed
into wonderful character
sketches of those people who
have made their marks on this
land.
I marvel that ordinary debris
can be transformed into
striking vignettes of visual
artistry just by the powerful
process of time and energy and
light.
The natural forces slowly
reclaims man’s residue, but
