Artist Statement:
Michael Richardson is based in Kent on the East Coast of England. He paints in oils and watercolour in a figurative / modern impressionist style. His main concern is with the effect of light and the way in which it can challenge our preconceptions of what something should look like.
To an extent the appearance of our surroundings is always an illusion in that the particular atmospheric conditions in which a scene is viewed will probably never precisely recur.
The way in which light can change an object or a scene is something that has to be studied and as much as possible understood to give authenticity to the work and is perhaps the most exciting and rewarding part of working "en plein air, sur le motif".
He makes frequent short visits to favourite haunts in Europe and elsewhere using his motorhome as a travelling studio and is hoping to revive the illustrated painters travel diary format in the next few years with some longer journeys. Any publishers out there?
As a member of the famous Wapping Group of Artists he spends many Wednesday afternoons painting somewhere on the River Thames recording Londons magnificent river in all her many moods.
