Artist Statement for Roberta Rosenthal

Award winning artist, Roberta Rosenthal is a professional painter, illustrator, designer and art instructor. Her speciality is botanical and landscape images. Watercolor and gouache are her primary media. She also works in pastels, acrylics and oils. Her art has been commissioned for over 35 years by fortune 500 corporations, appearing in the New York Times, Horticulture Magazine, Fine Gardening Magazine, Avon Books, United Nations magazine, postage stamps for the Republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands. Roberta has exhibited her art in solo and juried group shows including the Horticultural Society of New York, American Museum of Illustration, The Asia Society Museum, New York State Museum in Albany, Sullivan County Museum New York and the New York Botanical Gardens.

“Botanical subjects, landscapes and spiritual culture are the elements of my art. I focus on floral studies and place them in spiritual locations. My creative process engages meditation, research and drawing studies merging towards the final painting. I use watercolor, gouache or oil media on paper or gessoed panel. The paintings contain many layers of transparent, translucent and opaque colors to achieve the essence of nature. Traditional botanical art training combined with my previous work done in oriental brush painting, textile design and illustration blend in my current paintings. My current studio is in the foothills of the Catskill mountains. I have a woodland garden and view of the Hudson Valley providing a natural environment for visual study.”
