Artist Statement for Robert Glick

Several years ago a gallery owner was impressed by my poetry and offered to sell it if I could find a way to display it. Faced with this challenge, I received some technical advice and started experimenting. I was intrigued by the myriad effects of language and figurative composition fused into a single form of expression and this kept me going until I developed sufficient skill to surrender to the call of art.

Using acrylics and oils, sometimes combined with resin, plaster, graphite, paper and other materials, I craft figurative abstracts primarily inspired by nature or concerned with the human condition. Touched with a wry sense of humor, fragments of quizzical, sensual verse can often be found scrawled graffiti-style across the page, or deeply embedded within layers of color. As both author and artist, it seems natural to combine language and form into motifs that, due to their different methods of communication, juxtapose the instinctual and rational, the raw and refined, the abstract and tangible. Often focused on creation, some works evoke images of God, religion, evolution and the origins of man.
