Artist Statement:
The forms in my current body of work are derivative of nightmares I had as child, wherein I was chased through tangled & knotted chaotic landscapes by misshapen blobs. Subjugating the negative aspects of these nightmare memories by transforming them into positive harmonious images serves as a practice that I apply conceptually to all my work.
Making discarded plastic sculptures applies my modus operandi on an additional level -- I am constantly finding unwanted, unloved, scary, ugly, dirty, or somehow negatively charged objects to transform in my surroundings. I ask myself what to do with all this garbage, all this chaos, all this messy stuff that nobody seems to love or care for.
Passage, slippage & movement, as they pertain to the learning process in particular, also fascinate me. I think of learning as passing through a membrane into seemingly unexplored territory and becoming reacquainted with it. We are either literally or figuratively required to move about in order to learn. We must constantly shift our perspectives in order to grasp the entirety of any situation.
