Artist Statement for Roland Lee
|
|
|
I am inspired by movement and growth as revealed in shape and texture.
Roland’s sculptural themes are developed using the
resilient properties of porcelain, smooth or crank clay, oxidation fired at stoneware temperatures.
Stoneware, crank and raku clay provide a surface resilient enough to both accommodate the structural effects of sculpting and a textured grain to hold different layers of transition metal oxides while they fuse at 1,260 'C. The warm tones of the clay body enhance the russet colours from iron and the blues from cobalt.
Roland exhibits in galleries in the West Country and also with two groups, Trinity (photographic, oil, and ceramic artists) and Hidden Horizons (painters and ceramicists).
Roland works at CanvasnClay, www.canvasnclay.co.uk, with the painter Jackie Maundrell-Hall who works in oils and pastels.
