Artist Statement for Ronak Kordestani

My paintings bridge the gap between representational images and abstraction. Although recognizable objects are often depicted, human figures, footprints, trees and a crescent moon, they are blurred, distorted, and then delicately layered on a shadowy background. I like to create a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere, otherworldly landscapes and images of unidentifiable people floating peacefully in an ambiguous space that comes from the deepest part of the unconscious mind.

In some of my works, I use warm colors to give the paintings an exotic or mystical appearance to make them stand out dramatically from the neutral surroundings. As the title of the Dream Gardens and Passage series (2008) indicates, the environment depicted is not a physical location but an imaginary site reached only by a mental journey from our everyday surroundings. This surreal landscape evokes memories of a distant time and place which exists only in the imagination, and yet seems strangely familiar.
