Artist Statement for Rosalind Kaplan

Art has always been a very important part of my life. Now that i am retired I have been able to devote myself full time to my painting. Even though I was a practicing physician for many years, I always painted and took art courses in my free time.
I consider art and science to be the highest forms of intellectual achievement. Often the individual distinctions defining art or science are so interrelated that they merge.
I have often sought to portray my interest in science and my fascination with color in my paintings.I have explored multiple media-oil, water color, printing, monotypes, collage and encaustics. My choice of subject matter in my paintings-anthropology,cosmology biology and meteorology reflect my scientific background.
My earlier paintings are more realistic but the emphasis is still on color and the use of complementary colors.
I have done a series on cosmology utilizing my own patients' fluoroscein angiographies with
images in space called "Images of Images in Space". Also there is a series of "Bodyscapes " which are landscapes painted in an impressionistic abstract manner within a section of the human body.
I experimented with drip and spatter painting in my windowscapes and citiscape series.
Although I was primarily an oil painter for over 30 years,I recently switched to encaustics because it allows for tremendous texture and depth. I also use drip painting with the wax because it is somewhat haphazard and evokes the element of chance and surprise.
