RICHARD TAYLOR
Director

Richard Taylor holds an extensive background in live action direction, production design, special effects, and computer generated images for theatrical films, television commercials, and computer games.

Richard began his career as an artist and holds a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Utah. Richard began making short films in 1965 and in 1967 co-created Rainbow Jam, a multi-media light show and graphics company. Rainbow Jam toured with The Grateful Dead and regularly preformed concerts at the Family Dog, The Fillmore, The Winterland and other rock venues with bands such as Santana, Led Zeppelin, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jethro Tull, and many more.

In 1971 Richard received The Cole Porter Fellowship to USC graduate school where he earned his Masters Degree in Photography and Printmaking.

In 1973 Richard joined Robert Abel and Associates, the pioneer TV commercial graphics/special effects studio, where he served six years as Art Director/Director. While at Abel’s, Richard created many award winning spots, receiving four Clio awards for his work on the 7UP Bubbles, 7UP Uncola and Levi’s Trademark commercials. He also directed numerous promotional films for ABC, CBS, and NBC as well as designing new theatrical logos for CBS and Columbia Pictures. As a part of his work at Robert Abels Richard worked for Paramount Pictures in 1979 where he designed and supervised the building of the models, including the Enterprise, for Star Trek the Motion Picture.

In 1980 Richard became the Creative Director at Information International Inc. (III). III was one of the first companies to produce computer generated images for film and television. While at III Richard designed and directed the special effects for Looker, a Michael Crichton feature and became the co-effects director of the innovative special effects and computer-generated images for Walt Disney’s Tron, the film that introduced America to the world of computer simulation.

In 1983 Richard became director of Magi-Synthavision’s new West coast office. Magi contributed half of the computer generated images for Tron. While at Magi the company created special effects for Disney’s Something Wicked This Way Comes and John Laseters’ Were the Wild Things Are. Magi also produced numerous commercials including Atari’s Worm War One the first commercial to receive a Clio for computer animation.

Richard joined with Lee Lacy and Associates in 1985 where he directed award winning commercials for clients such as Ford, 7UP, RCA, and Duracell.

In 1987, Richard moved to Apogee Production Inc. where he launched the internationally acclaimed 7UP company’s Spot campaign. During this time, his 7UP commercial Baseball won the CLIO for Best Live Action Animation Combinations and the spots Teacher Lounge and Christmas both won BEST DIRECTOR at the INTERNATIONAL MONITOR AWARDS.

From 1989 to 1992, Richard was at Image Point Productions where he directed award winning spots for clients such as 7UP, Kellogg’s, and Reebok.

In 1992, Richard joined with director David Dryer to form Dryer/Taylor Productions, where he directed campaigns for Duracell, McDonalds, Warner Bros., and Disney. While there, Richard won three CLIOS, two HUGOS and two MOBIUS AWARDS.

From 1998- 2000, Richard directed for Rhythm and Hues, expanding his clientele to include Disney Cruise Lines, UPS, Honda, Bud Light, Intel, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and Census 2000.

In 2000, Richard joined BeachHouse Films. While there he directed spots for SAS (Statistical Analysis Systems), Toyota, and Disney Home Video, among others.

Aside from directing commercials and game cinematics, Richard creates original art that has been featured in table top books on computer art. His work is represented by Phillips Gallery.

During 2002 and 2003 Richard worked as the Cinematics Director for Indie Studios, a division of Microsoft Gaming Studios. While at Indie, Richard designed, directed, and edited the cinematic sequences and promotional trailers for Top Spin and Links 2004. He also worked as a consultant to Disney Interactive and Monolith Studios on the Tron 2.0 PC game.

Richard is currently the Cinematics and Live Action Art Director at Electronic Arts Los Angeles and has worked on titles including Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth I and II, among others. Notably, Richard has worked with top Hollywood actors during live action shoots for Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars including Michael Ironside, Josh Holloway, Billy Dee Williams, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park.
Presently Richard is finishing the cinematic sequences on Red Alert 3. Again the cinematics include a notable cast...including Tim Curry, Jonathan Price, Jenny McCarthy, George Takei, J.K. Simmons, Randy Couture, Peter Stormare and David Hasselhoff.

Artist Statement As an artist I’ve been fortunate to have had a uniquely varied career; I have a BFA in Painting and an MFA in Printmaking/Photography. I co-founded Rainbow Jam a Light Show/Graphic Design Company that toured with the Greatful Dead and preformed at Rock concerts throughout the West in the late 60's and early 70's. I've directed commercials for thirty years and have been the Special Effects Director for motion pictures such as Tron, the film that introduced the world to computer imaging. As a result, I’ve seen an extraordinary evolution in the technologies that support the arts.
If artists are truly the mirror of their times then it’s clear that the evolution of technology will forever effect artistic expression.
The phenomenal advancements in computer imaging over the last twenty years has made it possible to create new and formerly impossible visions. I’ve been involved with computer imaging since it’s early days and I knew from the beginning that it was the most powerful visual tool ever created by man. It’s now clear that the potential of computer generated images is infinite. In many of my prints I've tried to create the impossible, the paradox and the magical. That to me is what art should be. Creating images that remind one of something they've never seen before, images that seem familiar but are in fact entirely new. Unfortunatly, there are many in the arts who believe the use of computers is in some way "cheating" and that the images created by artists using a computer are not legitimate art. There were of course, similar sentiments when photography evolved into the arts.
A computer is no different than a Leica Camera or a Steinway Piano, in that, it’s how the artist plays it and brings life to it that makes all the difference in the world.
Presently I'm Cinematics Director on Lord of the Rings,"Battle for Middle Earth" at Electornic Arts Los Angeles. I'm also directing commercials for The Intity Agency.
