Artist Statement for Richard Thomson

Magic, Freedom, and the Assemblage Arts.
Thoughout my life I have been fasinated by and seeking true magic and the freedom that it implies. Art was, in my mind the gateway to both. In the past, in my journey though painting and sculpting, I could sense the magic but not quite touch it. Then one day the magic reached out to me and that day I went out into the world and sought those things that had power but lost their orgininal porpose. I went into the studio and found my own paintings I felt had no soul and together we found my voice. The stories are about abandonment, regection, fear, love, and of course, Magic. While still bound to the everyday grind, in my studio, with my things, I feel a sense of freedom and excitement for the magic that seems to materialize from the air.

I feel there are those out there that have fallen into numbing mediocricy and all they need is a shout to startle them, so this is my shout out. The Art will wake them, so I offer these few items as a wake up call to the community that things are not as they were.

I've seen heaven, and been through hell, only time will tell which way this story is going to go.
