Artist Statement for Ruben Nusz

|
Using traditional vanitas imagery as the initial impetus, my recent photographs deal with visceral life fluids, the slippery nature of time, as well as the cyclical qualities of life accessed through time's stoppage (photography). The artist Christian Boltanski believes that photography is associated with death and the past. But is it possible that photography represents the eternal present?
My Memento Mori Series includes photographs of life fluids (eggs, blood, milk, Pepto Bismol) juxtaposed with death materials (cigarettes, blood, ashes). The Naturaleza Muerta Series(literally translated as "Dead Nature") uses the diptych to show silmilar yet altered imagery that has been transformed by time or destroyed by the artist's hand. A contrast is established, yet, for me, using a Taoist perspective, life and death are the same. They are intertwined. Maybe there is no "in between." Maybe the area or the moment between the two images is actually an illusion.
