Artist Statement for Ruby Hanna
Ruby is a self-taught artist who began painting in 2003 at the age of 34. In the course of over 5 years, Ruby has painted over 150 pieces, ranging from imagined faces in oil pastels to passionate scenes in acrylics to bold abstracts in mixed mediums. Ruby strives to express herself freely and to be true to her sensibilities. Motivated by shapes, colors, and depictions of deep human emotion, Ruby’s art is both inspiring as well as visually stimulating.
Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, and currently living in Austin, Texas, Ruby says that painting has been great therapy, “It’s practically the only time my mind lets me rest." Ruby is inspired by the human condition and is often shocked at how her deep feelings translate themselves onto the canvas. Ruby explains, “My pieces can be so revealing but I often don't realize it until I've completed a piece and look back on what I've done." Ruby studied English Literature in college and still has not decided if she will take any classes or coursework in the visual arts.
