Artist Statement:
Recording data to uncover a history of movement, experience and duration. Recognizing common, usually unacknowledged, personal proofs to reveal and chart encounters with existence. Showing timelines through unconventional subject matters, repetitions, and narratives. Tracking life and exposing subtle truths in passing.
In the Computer Icon series, Shamus combines the ancient media of mosaics with current images of technology thus introducing the old to the new and questioning its sustainability. In the saturated age of digital technology, new art forms emerge and ideas transform rapidly. Languages, concepts and techniques succumb to technology’s thrust forward. Computer icons are symbols for the language that is altering our culture and with this series he reveals an instant amidst the transformation. How will modern technology change us in 10, 20, 30…100 years? With the passive acceptance of new technologies, are we damaging ourselves? Mosaics have survived thousands of years; your computer is obsolete in two.
The Nomad series is a continuing project measuring the habitation of dwellings spanning a lifetime. Documentation (images, addresses and dates) of each house where the artist has lived is maintained to reveal an unrealized history.
