Artist Statement for Elzbieta Sadza

Elzbieta Sadza was born in Poland in 1977. In 1995 she graduated from Szermentowski Art School of Fine Arts in Kielce where she majored in old-masters painting and gilding techniques. In 2002 received an MFA in Visual Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland. She works in drawing, painting and printmaking mediums, makes book illustrations and designs theatre scenery.

The prologue to my love affair with art was a coincidence; a coincidence and an absolute catastrophe according to my parents. Accidentally I once overheard my mom talking to her friend whose son was an artist. The story the woman was telling was filled with exhibitions, models, parties, travels and events unusual for an ordinary man. Not able to sleep, two days before a deadline, I hid my application forms from the school that my parents had chosen for me and, to their disappointment, I applied for art school. I studied at The Szermentowski’ School of Fine Arts, and then, consequently, at The Academy of Fine Arts, as opposed to the school of their liking, the renowned university in the neighborhood. To them, the passion to create symbolized the worst Egyptian plague that had been omitted from the Bible. Consistently, after learning of my choice, the entire family felt like mourning…But things turned out to be not so bad. Even my mom forgave me, when finally she started to look like herself on portraits painted by me…

I made my first print about three years ago, as I was forced to take a printmaking class at University and so switched from dirty brushes and the smell of turpentine to acid and zinc. Despite my first plate almost being completely burnt in the acid, printmaking became one of my favorite medias.

I am still learning, but I am not afraid of making mistakes. I have affection for failings and blemishes. I like to find unsuspected marks on my prints. I like to discover lines, scratches and spots which were not created purposefully. I do not want my prints to be predictable and perfect, even if the shown image is supposed to be realistic.
My works are inspired by people, memories, and objects, by what I notice everyday. Sometimes I hear a story; sometimes I see an image which I kept in my head for a long while until it is transmitted onto the plate. Sometime I use similar ideas to create a print, a drawing or a painting. Every time by using a different medium, I am forced to use different means of expression. I am not always satisfied but I am eager to learn. And I feel it is just the beginning of my art path.
