Artist Statement:
Samantha Thompson’s (née
Biddle) pastel and acrylic
paintings display a complex of
influences from her rich and
varied life to date. Born in
Sydney in 1978 to her parent
that where immigrants from
California, her work has a
consistency that developed
since she began working in
this media as a sixteen year
old.
Spending her formative years
in the Melbourne environs, in
particular her adolescence in
the Dandenong ranges,
Samantha’s paintings reflect
her pacific inheritance with
their bold colours, stylized
femininity and echoes of a
burlesque art deco era.
Samantha’s formation as an
artist began at home working
alongside her parents. From
her mother she learned
colour-matching skills while
observing her making patchwork
quilts, and learning to
appreciate the great artists
of the past from a
fifteen-volume encyclopaedia
of the history of art that her
mother left strewn around the
house.
The youngest of four girls and
a long suffering brother, she
remembers being captivated by
the works of Picasso,
Botticelli and Degas in
particular, as well as the
stunning images of the
photographers of the National
Geographic, which she copied
often in her formative years.

Welcome to Samantha Thompson's Portfolio.
Samantha Thompson’s (née Biddle) pastel and acrylic paintings display a complex of influences from her rich and varied life to date.
