“With fluid line work and a highly experimental use of media, Indian artist Sangeeta Singh paints intimate portraits, dynamic representations of animals, and images that border on the abstract. Her energetic compositions range from the loosely representational to an almost cubist restructuring of space. In kinetic images of Herculean bulls, Singh captures the sinew and the stature of the noble beasts so celebrated in classical culture and traditions worldwide. Working in a variety of media, she combines traditional Chinese and Indian painting techniques with contemporary sensibilities. In delicate washes, calligraphic contours and expressionistic brushstrokes, Singh creates images that are at once aesthetically diverse and vibrantly personal. For over 15 years, Singh has worked as a painter, completing commissions for collectors in India, Canada, the U.K., France, and the U.S. “
She’s an art nomad. Travelling between styles, mediums, themes and techniques - both traditional and contemporary. Her works swing between the very abstract to the very realistic. But her colours are rich, always luminous. Intense. Striking. Her work always soul-stirring, thought provoking, at the same time , soothing and cheerful. Even when she’s working with charcoal she manages to let that intensity flow into those black confident strokes.
She’s constantly experimenting. Charcoal on canvas. Oil on brushed steel, frescos on cement walls, and traditional Patachitra colour substances for Chinese landscape.
It brings the freshness of the unconventional to her work. A whole new perspective. But she says she still draws her inspiration from the old masters.
In the same vein of restlessness, she takes on styles that are difficult to master. For eg. Patachitra style. Leaving her mind an soul open to challenges, and you can see it clearly in her myriad works.
A professional artist for the last 15 years she’s completed and commissioned over a thousand paintings for clients across India, UK, Canada, France and the US.
Her clients include leading hotels like The Ramada, the Regent, The Claridges, offices, homes and private collectors.
Several leading architects and interior designers have worked with her and continue to do so for her enthusiasm, her vibrant energy, her passion , which, is so naturally reflected in her work. And that’s the way she would want it. Because as she says in her own words ‘My painting is a special gift, to be shared celebrated and enjoyed.
Art Background : She studied fine art at the Jawaharlal Technological University at Hyderabad, India. And pursued her interest in ceramics at the LS Raheja Institute in Mumbai, India.
More recently, she studied traditional art of Orissa - traditional painting with vegetable dyes and natural substances on silks for 3 years. To push the boundaries of her creativity even further she went ahead and studied traditional Chinese Painting from Mr. Fang Zhi Qiang from Shanghai university, China. Not satisfied she’s also putting her talented hand to Leather batik, painting on leather, and to ceramic ware.
