Artist Statement:
I started collecting artwork, mostly from Latin American artists, some twenty years ago. By the end of 2001 I started to wonder if I should try my hand at doing my own art and in January, 2003, I embarked in the adventure. The works displayed here are the result.
On my birthday I received a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates and I was taken by the wrinkles in the gold wrappings and how they changed depending on how they were positioned towards the light. I immediately saw my first work in my mind: "Ou sont les Bombons". I became fascinated by the idea of intervening humble utilitarian materials previously manipulated by anonymous workers or mechanically processed, in order to give them some permanence and turn them into a meaningful plastic experience. I then took wood panels - an agglomerate of pine shavings - from the boxes in which the Japanese suppliers of the factory I work for in Colombia pack our raw materials, and by colouring the different shavings that form the pattern in the wood "Selva Gris" and "Trópico de Un Capricornio" became my next works.
