Artist Statement:
Hi folks, if you are
interested in the Australian
landscape take a look at my
paintings and see what you
think. I hope you like them
and I'd be glad to hear any of
your thoughts, so feel free to
write in the guestbook.
I seek to discover the energy,
mystery and diversity of
particular landscapes rather
than documenting the purely
topographical or specific
effects of light. My focus is
on the urban creeks and rivers
of Melbourne, Australia. Their
urbanity is expressed by their
verticality rather than
subject matter though. Or if
horizontal - a letterbox
format. There are no visible
buildings, cars etc.- nothing
to indicate the modern world
other than a sense that space
is compressed and limited.
Trees are the main subject
which are conceptualised as
rhapsodic expressions of the
natural world. Colour is both
natural and symbolic. They are
icons for contemplation.
To create them I tune into the
spirit of a particular place
and access this spiritual
'tone' again when I am
painting. The drawings and
photos I take at the time are
just an aid to memory rather
than as a true basis for the
paintings. I translate my
initial spiritual 'tone' into
