Artist Statement for Simon Boyd
In his current work, Simon explores the concept of desire through the seemingly insatiable appetite for sensory pleasures and excess. This is symbolized by sweets and candy; where clever packaging and imaginative simulations of fruit make them enticing and alluring. Candy offers an irresistible, short-lived experience, where, once the sugar has dissolved, we are left wanting more.
Simon seeks to encapsulate his sweet compositions within flower-like shapes, so that they seemingly sit in suspended animation on the canvas. Using acrylic, oil, aerosol paint and glitter, he aspires to create the illusion of a state that is both temporary and in constant flux.
Sweets have associations with infancy and, in this sense, the paintings are retrospective and playful. They offer a refuge and an escape to childhood. On the other hand, they could also be seen as ‘keyholes’ of desire, tempting one to probe deeper, with the lure of pleasure and satisfaction. Perhaps, like the apple of original sin, once the invitation has been accepted, a more complex, less innocent reality will be revealed.
Simon was born and raised in London. He studied Fine Art for four years at Middlesex University, focusing essentially on painting and video. Since graduating he has continued to cultivate his passion for painting, while also working as a graphic designer at Pink Pigeon, a successful DVD & video postproduction company he co-created in Soho, London. He is currently based in Argentina.
