EMERGING ARTIST
Hampton's Sheri Lynn Burhoe embraces her art career with gusto

There are those who create art because they enjoy it. And then there are those who are driven to paint by an undeniable urge.
For some, this urge is a curse that they fight all their lives. Others accept it as part of what they are and work with it.
Sheri Lynn Burhoe is one of the latter. This mother of two from Hampton has no formal training and showed no early inclination to be an artist. But she was struck by the need to create and, luckily, recognized this as a worthwhile pursuit.
"I just decided to take some art classes and that was in 1999," she said. "It's something that just hit me. I sat down one spring day and did some postcards for the Hampton Tourist Bureau, and they all sold and then I took the painting course and it's been all go since then."
Although her art career is still in its infancy, she has embraced it with gusto. After the painting course she set about studying and working on her own. Using books and the Internet she studied the work of artists she liked. She applied what she learned through hands-on practice.
Already she finds that she has developed a recognizable style. Lots of colour, stylized figures and vegetation, and collage with natural materials seem to be her trademarks.
"I love to use collage and integrate different pieces like that into my work," she said. "My work is expressionism. I try to use pure colour and try to keep everything bright and bold. Some of it is monochrome but it's mostly colour."
She often uses unique pieces of wood as her painting surface. Her husband, an electrician, finds unusual wood on his work sites and collects them for her.
"My husband brings home pieces and I'll use that or I'll recycle pieces like an old shelf."
Recently, she has been commissioned to work on furniture and cabinets. This is work that she finds artistically, and financially, rewarding.
The cabinet work also ties in with interior decorating training she has. Burhoe believes that this training helped hone a sense of balance and composition, but stresses that her work is based on natural instinct.
"I usually go by feeling with my work and intuition and freely paint," she said. "Inspiration comes from my mood and my feeling. I can look at my work and say, how did I get that? I don't even know sometimes where it came from."
Regardless of the source, it would seem that the public likes the results. Burhoe started showing her work in Sessions Cafe in Rothesay in 2003. This is where I first looked up from a latte and thought "Hey! That's neat stuff!" Birch bark was worked into irregularly shaped surfaces among funky flowers and faces. Local artists, Carol Taylor and Holly McKay, also thought the work was worthwhile and encouraged Burhoe to contact the Saint John Art Centre (SJAC).
From there she had her first solo exhibition at the SJAC in 2004. And, next week, she has another exhibition of her work opening at the Ward Chipman Library on the UNBSJ campus. The show is called Embracing the Figurative Garden, and will feature some work from her previous solo show in addition to new work.
It's an impressive early track record for someone who isn't even locally represented by a gallery. But Burhoe remains matter-of-fact about her career choice.
"I'm basically a stay-at-home-mom and my art, ...I'm totally wrapped up in it and I'm very serious about it. It's a business for me."
Sheri Lynn Burhoe's exhibition opens at the Faculty Staff Lounge in the
Ward Chipman Library Building on the UNBSJ campus on Sunday, Feb 13th from 2-4 p.m. The show will be up for a month and is open to the public. Call 648-5600 for information.
