Artist Statement for Sam Coleman
|
|
|
“An appreciation for beauty and art was pressed into my heart from the very start of my life.”
One of Sam’s earliest memories was going to the top of a hill near his house to watch the sunset with his father. They gazed at the sunset until the last bit of orange, yellow, and red had faded from the sky.
From that experience and many others an appreciation for the beauty and grandeur of nature was pressed into Sam that has continued ever since.
Sam also learned to appreciate painting from his mother, grandmother, and an excellent art teacher by the name of Marianne Crary.
Art became an important part of his life and he began competing in 4-H, local art shows, and the Junior Federal Duck Stamp.
Through his parents encouragement and Sam’s realization that art would always be an integral part of his life, he began training in classical realism at The Atelier in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Through this art school, dedicated to the study of nature and developing skills in drawing, painting, composition, and color theory, Sam’s horizons were expanded into portraiture, landscapes, and still life.
While attending The Atelier, Sam also went through seminary at Magdalen College and received his ordination as a licensed minister. After 4 and one-half years of training in Minnesota, Sam now resides in Mandan, ND with his beautiful wife and is currently the Youth Director at Charity Lutheran Church. He teaches art workshops and has continued to pursue his lifelong dream and goal to portray the beauty of creation in his art.
