Artist Statement:
After receiving her Fine Arts degree in the graphic arts, Nicolette Arens has gradually moved away from graphic techniques to drawing and painting. Although her background in graphics can still be seen in the colouring and style of much of her work, the formal accentuation of bright colours against thick black lines is gradually giving way to a looser, freer style, which is most evident in her drawings and paintings of chickens.
The natural world forms the core of Arens’ work. She is especially fond of islands, lighthouses and the borderline between land and sea with all its inhabitants (puffins are a leitmotif in her work). Her art is a study of form and colour: “What particularly interests me is the interaction of the visual elements of lines, shapes, tones and colours”. By introducing a kaleidoscopic aspect into her landscapes and leaving out unnecessary details, she creates an unusual atmosphere in which the individual forms appear abstract while the whole remains figurative in nature.
