Artist Statement for Sesillie Girelli

For as long as I can remember, art has been an important part of my personal identity. To be able to capture the world around me and express how I see it, how I feel it and how it affects me. This is what drives me to paint. Art can express many facets of the human experience. My goal is to express its beauty.
INTENSIFIED REALISM.
This is a term that has been used to describe my style and I would have to agree. My composition and subject matter is grounded in realism. That is to say that you can find an interesting story to tell in the common experiences we witness on a daily basis. Inspired by the Impressionists, I paint not the object itself, but the way light hits the surface of the object. Broken brush strokes show the flicker of light and create a feeling of movement. I enjoy using vibrant and stimulating, rich colors to bring out the life of the objects and scenery I paint. I often employ the use of perspective to bring the viewer into the painting. These are tools I continue to develop to involve the viewer with my vision. I hope you feel the same emotion from my paintings that I get from creating them.
