Artist Statement for Shadia Zayed

As a child I remember declaring my plan to be an artist “when I grow up.” At that age, I hadn’t figured out that you either are an artist or you aren’t. If you live to create, if you love the process, if you really feel passion for it…you are an artist. Now that I know that I am an artist, I simply aspire to be the best one that I can be.
I work in acrylics, with heavy reliance on textural mediums. My substrates include stretched canvas, canvas panels, and clay board. I have found that sturdier substrates are more conducive to the some of the heavier textural applications in my latest work. While I still favor canvas for its feel and give, my experience as a decorative painter has helped me view virtually any surface as a potential canvas–simply waiting to be transformed by paint. I love incorporating metallic paints into my work as well, because I appreciate the subtlety of the way light mingles over the surface of a metallic sheen, the way metallics sit in the caverns of a highly textured ground, and the way that they add light even to the darkest of paintings.
While my most recent work draws more inspiration from color and texture than distinct subject matters, my objective remains to imbue my canvasses with a sense of emotion. Through the intricate texture and vibrant color in my pieces, I aim to create a visceral response in the viewer; my hope is that the viewer may connect with them emotionally rather than through conscious, deliberate effort. In this way, viewers create their own interpretations through this initial connection, and the narrative of the piece becomes secondary.
I typically work on several bodies of work concurrently. My most recent endeavors include the following:
“Mindscapes” - I began this series in 2005. It is an abstract series of pieces that reads almost as vibrant landscapes, often seeming to have elements of nature- water, horizons, mountains, and skies, but that are really meant to reflect the internal world rather than the external. The shifts in color, undulating tones are meant to emulate our internal moods and emotions.
“Tiled & Textured” This series began in 2005 as well. It grew initially from my experience using mediums as a decorative painter. I found that by using a very structured grid as the basis of my paintings, I could convey a more frenetic energy while still keeping the painting in control.
While working on these styles, a third series has developed which is a hybrid of the two. They incorporate the iconography of the Mindscapes series with the heavy textural applications found in the Textured & Tiled series. I continue to strive to find new ways of expressing emotion by using new applications, materials, and techniques.
